On the subject of concussions in ice hockey

Thursday morning, like any sane individual, I was watching Game 4 of the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs (Why, Kings? Why?). Between yelling obscenities at my computer screen and marvelling at all the play the posts were getting, I had the unenviable task of explaining the intricacies of the sport to a roomful of non-believers.  The conversation inevitably turned the AIHL and to my surprise and delight, this was not the first time one particular girl was hearing about it. Less joy inducing was the fact that when questioned she admitted that she only knew the League existed due to stumbling upon an article online reporting on the concussion sustained by Daniel Szalinski. Do not worry, I said, it’s horrible but rare! Ice hockey isn’t actually a modern day gladiator battle! Can we go back to admiring Jonathan Quick now?
